The street closures scheduled for Saturday, October 3 and Saturday, October 10 for expanded outdoor dining are cancelled. At their September 8 meeting, the City Council authorized up to 4 Saturday closures of portions of San Mateo Avenue to support Dining on the Ave. Thus far, two events were held on Saturday, September 19 and Saturday, September 26.
Dining on the Ave was implemented through the closure of San Mateo Avenue from Kains to Angus. Feedback was mixed. Residents that participated clearly enjoyed being outside and supporting our local businesses. Some restaurants reported increased sales due to the ability to set-up tables in the roadway, while other businesses reported a decline in activity due to reduced foot traffic and parking availability. On some level, this outcome was expected. Due to COVID-19, the event was not intended to attract a large crowd, rather the objective was to support our local restaurants during this difficult time.
As of last Tuesday, September 22, restaurants in San Bruno and throughout San Mateo County were allowed to serve patrons indoors at 25% of their capacity (or 100 people, whichever is less), in accordance with the State’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy. This, combined with the ability for sidewalk dining, has reduced the need for the street closure. Additionally, last Saturday, September 26, five of 11 restaurants along the Kains to Angus portion of San Mateo Avenue participated and set-up tables on the sidewalk, as well as within the roadway. A total of 7 tables were in the roadway and, given the cancellation of the street closure, the City is working with restaurants to accommodate most of these tables on the sidewalk, along with waiving normal encroachment permit fees for sidewalk dining.
It is important to note that, while the street closure of San Mateo Avenue from Kains to Angus has been cancelled, restaurants in this area and throughout the City are open – many with both indoor and outdoor seating. Let’s continue to go out and support our local businesses.
