African American Quilts: History and Hands-On Project
Wednesday, September 14, 2022
Virtual Program via Zoom. Join Loretta Henry of the African American Quilt Guild of Oakland (AAQGO) as we celebrate over 400 years African American (AA) quilts. This event will last for about two hours. We will begin with a discussion of the art form. Some of the topics to be covered are: the work of present day African American quilters; how African American quilting influenced Modern quilting movement; quilting traditions before and after the United States Civil War; a comparison between African American and traditional quilting styles and a look at the Gees Bend Quilters. A sew-along workshop will follow. Participants will have the opportunity to make two quilt blocks inspired by the Gee’s Bends quilters. Instructions for a simple strip block and a Housetop block will be given. Participants may either view the workshop and later create a block or may take part in a sew-along during the session. Please provide your full name and an active email account to sign up.
