There a problem property near me, what should I do?
First, unless there is compelling reason not to, talk directly to your neighbor. Many people are unaware that parking on the front lawn, for example, is a sign of blight and against City codes, and have no idea it was bothering someone. They would much rather hear it from you than from us. If the property is rented, call 616-7074 and ask for the name of the legal owner; this usually gets quicker results than dealing with the renter.
If that doesn't work, talk with other neighbors. Chances are that if something bothers you, it's bothering others, too. Many times people will respond more quickly to a delegation from their neighbors rather than a single individual.
If your good neighbor effort fails, call the Code Enforcement Office at 616-7074 and make a complaint. Because of the volume of complaints we receive, it is not uncommon for problems that do not pose a threat to the public health or safety to not be addressed for thirty days.
To make a complaint, give the exact location, including street address, of where the problem is located, and a description of the problem. Include, as appropriate
-
The license number, type of vehicle and color, and other descriptive information (e.g., missing front tire, etc.);
-
The type of debris, such as car parts, building materials, garbage, etc.;
-
The nature of the suspected illegal activity (e.g., repairing vehicles in a residential neighborhood).
Not all problems violate City codes. If no code violation exists, the City cannot help you directly. However, many resources are available and the Code Enforcement Division can direct you to them
