One Book One Community

One Book One Community: San Mateo County Reads ("OBOC") is a county-wide reading program held annually in the fall to build community, call attention to reading and literacy and create a meaningful dialogue about books and reading.

Each year, the OBOC Selection Committee chooses a book written by a major author. What Is the What by Dave Eggers is the book for 2008's program. County residents are invited to read this same book at the same time and discuss it through a series of free programs over approximately one month.

The Third Thursday Bibliomaniacs Book of the Month is....

Unaccustomed Earth book cover imageThree Cups of Tea. Some failures lead to phenomenal successes, and this American nurse's unsuccessful attempt to climb K2, the world's second tallest mountain, is one of them. Dangerously ill when he finished his climb in 1993, Mortenson was sheltered for seven weeks by the small Pakistani village of Korphe; in return, he promised to build the impoverished town's first school, a project that grew into the Central Asia Institute, which has since constructed more than 50 schools across rural Pakistan and Afghanistan. Join the Bibliomaniacs to discuss this book on Thursday, October 16 at 7 PM in City Hall Room 113.
